Why do American fast food restaurants not serve beer like European fast food restaurants?

Mark asked:

I noticed on my trip to Europe that beer was sold in McDonalds. Why not sell beer in America? Beer is sold in casual dining restaurants like Chilis. Fast food restaurants would make a nice profit. Sure, they would have to card their customers and this would take some extra time, but I think the benefits would outweigh the costs.
